Kevin Francis O'Connor
was born in Moorestown, Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry on 20th September 1934 and passed away here on 26th December 2013.
Kevin was the third of five children born to Tom & Bridget O'Connor.
Kevin came to Los Angeles in 1957. Shortly after his arrival he met a petite redhead named Catherine Hartnett. Kevin & Catherine were married in September 1958. From that marriage of forty eight years they had two daughters and six sons.
Kevin was a hard working self employed landscape contractor. He loved to fish, loved his sports, loved his family, loved his twenty grandchildren, loved this country and was so proud when he became an American citizen. Kevin never forgot where he was born. He loved "The Kingdom"!!! He spoke fluent Gaelic.
Kevin was predeceased by his wife, Catherine on 7th May 2007. He is survived by two daughters: Maureen (Mike) & Kathleen (Steven); six sons: Tom (Wendy), Kevin (Kelly), Vincent (Chris), John (Jody), Dennis (Jeannie) & Brendan (Jacqueline); twenty grandchildren; and his sister, May O'Connor Kiggins in Victorville.

Patrick J. Morrison
was born on 16th November 1945 in Cork and passed away in Los Angeles on 20th December 2013. The Morrison family moved to London when Patrick was eleven.
Patrick was a "star" sprinter. In 1965 he was awarded the Amateur Athletic Association's star athletic award. Later that year, Patrick received an athletic scholarship to Stanford University.
Like his mother Mary, Patrick had a passion for painting. In 1971 Patrick moved to Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife Carey Kawaye-Morrison; two sons: Brendan and Liam; his first wife Madeline Puzo; his sister Helen and her husband Donal Tully of Waterford.


dollyLillian Dolores "Dolly" Martin was born in Dublin on 24th October 1942 and passed away suddenly in Los Angeles on 10th November 2013.
Dolores Murray and Tim Martin immigrated to Los Angeles in 1963 where they married at St Ignatius of Loyola.
Dolly loved her sports. In her youth she played camogie alongside her sisters Anna and Pauline. An actress, a dancer, a golfer and a vibrant member of our community Dolly was a very ordinary lady who was extraordinary. She played golf every week with the Lady Duffers of De Bell Golf Club, Burbank. Dolly scored "a hole in one" on two separate occasions of which she was extremely proud.
Wearing many hats within the Irish-American community Dolly cherished her role as an active member of the Celtic Arts Center where she taught Irish dance and served as a member of the Irish Center of So California.
A loving wife, mother and friend one of Dolly's most treasured rolls was as a grandmother. She loved her grandchildren unconditionally and instilled in them the values pertaining to the Irish cultures. She enjoyed watching and cheering them at baseball and water polo games. Dolly loved Irish dancing with her grandchildren.
Dolly was preceded in death by her parents Thomas & Mary Murray and sisters Alice Hall and Mona O'Hara.
Dolly is survived by her husband Tim; sons: Derrick and Sheamus and wife Valerie; daughter Linda and husband Justin Wright; grandchildren Shayla, Eileen, Ciara, Colin and Sinead Martin, and Bradley, Eric, Meghan Wright and JC Lepe; sisters Breda Agnew, Anna Gossain and Pauline Morrissey; brothers Terence (Nora), Padraig (Mary), Michael(Yvonne) & Sean(Edna) Murray.

Senan Flannen Breen, "Synie" was born on 17th December 1934 in Ballyknock, Kilamona, Ennis. Co Clare and passed away on 6th November 2013 in Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar with his two sons at his side. Synie was predeceased by his wife Cecily on 2nd July 2012. Survived by sons: Michael and Patrick (Rosaleen) ; and granddaughter Eleanor.
Michael lived in the Los Angeles area for 23 years and is well known in our community.


October 2013. Anne McCulloch passed away in Bray, Co Wicklow. Anne spent many years in Los Angeles and was a Legal Secretary with the Gas Company. She was very active in our Community and participated in many plays produced by the Tara Players. Anne enjoyed her many years here but returned to Bray in the late 70's due to family commitments.
Anne McCulloch was a very special person and will be sorely missed.

Michael McDonagh
was born in Co Fermanagh on 18th December 1931 and passed away on 31st October 2013 in Pasadena. Michael was the third eldest of eleven children born to Patrick & Ellen McDonagh. Michael emigrated to New York in 1954. He moved to California where he met Sheila Reid, a Dublin girl. Michael and Sheila were married on 14th June 1969. Mike is preceded in death by his beloved wife Sheila.
Mike is survived by his son Patrick & wife Liza; two daughters: Noreen & husband John Rubino; Roseanna & Stephen Jacques; and grandchildren Jack, Aidan, Gavin, Samantha and Liam.
Funeral services for Michael McDonagh will be on Thursday 7th November at 10 am at Holy Family Church, 1501 Fremont Ave, South Pasadena. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery.

Eileen Collins Giel
passed away peacefully at home on 29th October 2013 with her son Tom and daughter Peggy at her side.

Margaret "Peggy" Moran
was born on 6th August 1917 and passed away on 11th October 2013 in St John of God Retirement & Care Center in Los Angeles.
Peggy graduated from Bishop Conaty High School in 1934 and received her undergraduate degree from Mount St Mary's and a master's degree in science education in 1951 from University of Southern California. Peggy taught English in Japan for three years during the Korean War.
Peggy loved to travel and was always "camera ready". At many functions, especially Irish functions, Peggy was asked to take photographs. Peggy loved to paint and she donated her paintings to the Silent Auction at the Irish Center's annual St Patrick's Celebration. A memorial service for Margaret Moran will take place at "her" St Jerome's Church on Saturday, 23rd November at 10.00am, 5550 Thornburn St, Los Angeles.

James Fitzpatrick was born in Belfast on 2nd July 1924 and passed away in Long Beach on 9th October 2013. James left Belfast for Maryland, U S A in 1951.
In 1953 James and Belfast born Isabelle Brogan were married in Maryland. A few years later they moved to California. James was a baker by trade in Belfast. He became a meat cutter in California. He was employed by Vons for several years until his retirement.
James is preceded in death by his beloved Isabelle in 2008 and son Seamus (as a result of an accident) in early 1970's.
James is survived by his two sons Eddie; Paul and wife Kristi in Long Beach; grandchildren Frances and Seamus; and a sister Maria in Carson City.

Mary Teresa Jacobs Rice
was born in Dublin on 8th September 1930 and passed away in her daughter's home in Valencia on the 7th of October 2013. Mary was the eldest of four kids. Mary's mother passed away very young leaving Mary to take on the roll of mother to her younger siblings at the tender age of eight. Mary was very athletic and one of her tennis partners at Jacobs biscuit factory, where she was employed, was Des Cleary. One day Des informed Mary he was heading for America but would keep in touch with her. Some months later in a letter from Des was a one way ticket to America. Soon thereafter Mary was on her way to California. Des and Mary were married and lived in Glendale. After some years in Seattle they returned here and settled in with their two sons and two daughters and were happily married until they decided to part ways in 1974.
Mary married again in 1976 to Frank Rice. Mary and Frank were very happy and enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their trailer on the Colorado River. Unfortunately, Frank passed away suddenly in 1984. Mary retired to Sun Lakes Country Club where she lived happily for eighteen years. Ironically, Des Cleary also retired to Sun Lakes just around the corner from Mary. Mary and Des became great friends again and loved spending time with their children and grandchildren when they often came to visit. Mary was the best ex-wife a guy could ask for when Des became ill and passed away in 2005.
Mary loved her frequent visits by her children and grandchildren to Sun Lakes until she decided to move in with her daughter Ann in 2012 so she could be closer to her kids. Mary was diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer on 17th September and passed away on 8th October. Mary is survived by two sons & two daughters: John and wife Julie; Steven and wife Laura: Ann & husband Tim; Lorraine Dale (husband Bob passed in 2012); grandchildren: Andrew, Matthew, Adelynn, Daniel, Brendan and Jack.


Monica M. Cronin passed away in Santa Monica on 19th September 2013. Monica was born in Germany. In 1972 Monica and Tommy Cronin, a Limerick man, were married. Monica is mourned by her husband, Tommy; and several nieces and nephews in Ireland and Germany.

Charles John McGlinchey
was born in Ardara, Co Donegal on 28thJuly 1928 and passed away here on 17th September 2013. He emigrated to Canada in 1951. At an Irish dance he met Rollande Bessette who became his wife on 17th August 1957 at St Bridget's Church in Toronto. They drove to California for their honeymoon. Charles is survived by his wife, Rollande; son: Michael—wife, Laurie in Frederickberg, Virginia; daughters: Heather—husband, Steve Skogebo in Castaic; Nora—husband Scott Howard Cooper in Sacramento. Also mourned by grandchildren Megan, Cavin, Savannah, Jordan and Taylor.

James "Jim" McCann
was born in Belfast, Ireland on 18th October 1933 and passed away on 9th September 2013 at St Joseph's Hospital, Burbank, Ca, surrounded by his family. Jim was five years old when his parents and family moved to Portadown. At the age of eighteen Jim moved to New York with his Aunt Joy. After about three years working in a Hotel Jim decided to join the United States Army and he served our country for three years. On completion of the three years, Jim relocated to Los Angeles. Shortly thereafter he met up with a girl he knew from home, Imelda Murphy. On 24th November 1960 Jim and Imelda were married in Los Angeles. After working for Sears for many years Jim and Imelda opened McCann Floor Covering store. Some years later Imelda opened Shamrock Imports. Jim is survived by his wife Imelda; daughter Kelly and son-in-law Steve Miller; sons: Patrick; Sean and daughter-in-law Rowena; Kevin and daughter-in-law Tonya; eight grandchildren: Jimmy, Tesla, Kevin, Steven, Kaitlyn, Erin, Keira and Kiley. Predeceased by his son Jimmy in 1985. Jim is also mourned by his sister Joy in Canada; brothers John in Manchester; Michael in Ireland; Tom in New Zealand who came for the funeral and gave a very touching eulogy.

Ronald Christopher Ellis
was born in Dublin on 12th November 1929 and passed into eternal life on 3rd September 2013. Ron emigrated to Toronto in 1957. He came to California in 1960. At an Irish dance in 1967 Ron met Catherine "Kitty" Cronin who had arrived here from Millstreet Town, Cork in 1960. Ron and Kitty were married in June 1968. Ron is survived by his wife Kitty; daughter Kathleen; sons: Patrick—wife Caryn; Christopher—wife Krista; grandchildren Liam, Brenna, Jordan and Finnegan.


Poet and Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney passed away in Dublin 30th August 2013 after a short illness at the age of 74.

Six year old Tessa Kneafsey passed away on Wednesday, August 14th. Tessa is the daughter of Brian and Maura Jones Kneafsey and granddaughter of Richard and Annie Jones. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Michael Thomas O'Callaghan was born in Los Angeles on 6th December 1963 and passed away on 12th August 2013 in Pasadena. Michael graduated from Arcadia High School, University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Science Degree, Loyola Law School with a Juris Doctorate.In 1994 Michael graduated from Georgetown University Law Center, Graduate Studies in Taxation. In 2011 he graduated from Pepperdine University, School of Law, Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution. Michael was a prominent and respected attorney in Southern California. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed surfing, swimming, running, cycling and golf. He was a member of several Clubs, Country Clubs including Ballybunion Golf Club in Co Kerry where he won the Members Open tournament. Michael and Linda Kristin Hove were married on 17th August 2002 in Gougane Barra, Co Cork .Michael is survived by his wife Linda; daughter Catherine O'Callaghan; daughter Daisy Beckner;son Andrew Beckner; mother Hannah O'Callaghan; sisters Margaret (Richard) Gould in Pasadena and Siobhan (Jed) Robinson in Newport Beach; nephews Conor Gould, Brett and Colin Robinson and niece Lauren Robinson.

Carl Anton Stute was born on 1st January 1962 and passed away on 6th August 2013. Carl was the first baby born in St John's in 1962. He is survived by his daughter Colleen and her husband SSGT John Higgins and their four children: Serenity, Lilly-Anne, Autumn and Kaylin. Also survived by his parents: Myra and Richard Hubacher; sisters Kaya Tania and family; Jennifer Jackson and family; brothers: Andre and Alex and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Monsignor Thomas Doyle was born in Mooncoin, Co Kilkenny and passed away here on 5th August. Monsignor was ordained at St John's in Waterford in 1954.His first assignment was at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Wilmington for four years followed by three years in the archdiocesan marriage tribunal. He also served at St Joseph the Worker, Canoga Park, St Anthony's San Gabriel and St John of God in Norwalk where he was pastor from 1974—1984.
Monsignor Doyle was then appointed pastor of St James, La Crescent where he remained until his retirement in 1998.


On 20th July a Memorial Mass for Phil and Patti Whelan took place at the Columban House in Los Angeles. Both Phil and Patti passed away recently.

Sean Francis O'Brien
was born in Cork City in 1929 and passed away in Los Angeles on 18th July 2013. Sean was in construction as a master carpenter most of his life. He was a drummer with the Rebel Cork Pipe Band. Sean is survived by his daughter, Jackie; granddaughter Gillian and husband, Andrew Premchand in Grange, Cork; great granddaughters Erykah, Rebekah, Alexah and Indiah; great grandson Noah; and his sister Mary McGinn in Cork.

Rear Admiral John A. Scott
U.S. Navy (ret) was born in Northern Ireland on 7th February 1920 and passed away in Irvine on 10th July 2013. He was commissioned in the Navy in 1942 retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1974 after a distinguished career. He is survived by two daughters: Lyn Steinle of Orange and Deborah Gallagher of Reno; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Sr Celine Leydon, a Sister of St Louis for sixty five years, was born in Straid, Co Mayo in 1927 and passed away in Los Angeles on 4th July 2013. Sr Celine entered religious life in 1947 and ministered as a teacher and principal for 26 years in Los Angeles and 18 years as Associate Superintendent and then Superintendent of Schools in the Diocese of Orange.


Margaret Dowling Davis was born in Gregnamanagh, County Kilkenny on 19th January 1927 and passed away on 16th June 2013 in Riverside. In 1950 "Maggie" came to Los Angeles to live with her Aunt Mary. She soon became involved with the Irish and Irish Community especially Irish dancing. In 1951 Maggie met Hugh Davis. Hugh, from County Cork, was a musician (drummer) who played for many years in pipe bands. On 11th June 1955 Hugh and Maggie were married. They supported all the Irish clubs, Irish Hour Radio, Irish Center of So Calif and other Irish and Irish American organizations.
The funeral mass took place at St Francis de Sales in Riverside on 24th June.
Maggie is survived by her husband, Hugh; son, Thomas; six daughters Enda (Eugene), Theresa, Maureen, Patricia, Siobhan and Clare (Michael); grandchildren Christopher and Alana Wohlers and Brendan Veres; brothers Joseph and Thomas Dowling; and many nieces and nephews.


Rev Monsignor Thomas McGovern was born in Blacklion, Co Cavan on the 7th November 1920 and passed away in Long Beach on 17th May 2013. He was ordained in Maynooth in 1946 and arrived in Los Angeles in 1947. He served in several parishes until 1968 when he was appointed Pastor of Holy Family in So Pasadena. In 1984 Monsignor Thomas was appointed to St Bartholomew's in Long Beach and served until his retirement in 1991.
Monsignor McGovern is survived by his sister-in-law, Lena McGovern and several nieces and nephews.


Rev Jerome Lantry, aged 93, passed away on 16th April 2013. Fr Jerome was born in Co Offaly. He was ordained at Clonliffe College, Dublin in 1946. After parish work in Ireland he came to St Therese's, Alhambra in the 1950's. For many years Fr Jerome was the retreat master at El Carmelo Retreat House, Redlands. Since 1994 he was an associate pastor at St Therese. Fr Jerome was a member of the Carmelite Fathers.


Michael Peter Flynn was born in Lackagh, Co Galway on 17th July 1924 and passed on 25th February 2013. Michael was a highly regarded ENT specialist and plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Dr Flynn is survived by his wife, Heidi; son Peter (Deanne) in San Diego; daughter Dr Kate Flynn; and grandchildren Liam, Lydia and Daniel.


Daniel John Boylan was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts on 28th September 1921 and passed away in Burbank on 24th January 2013. Dan served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during WW2. Dan came to California in 1954 and in 1956 met Margaret Lydon (one of fourteen children, from Swinford, Co Mayo). Dan and Margaret married in 1959. Dan is survived by his wife Margaret; two sons: John and Arthur (Natilie); two daughters: Susan (John) Griffin who reside in Sydney, Australia and Kathleen, who is a teacher. Also mourned by four grandchildren: Tanya, Nicole, Finnian and Andrew.

Rose Doherty Dnistrian
was born in Dunaff, Co Donegal and passed away peacefully on 6th January 2013 in Jersey City surrounded by her loving family. "Rosie" was 81 years old. Rosie met her husband Dmytro Dnistrian at an Irish dance class in New York. They married in 1960 and lived in Jersey City since then. Dmytro Dnistrian passed away 10 years ago. Rosie was the cherished mother of Rev Dmytro Dnistrian; Stephen Dnistrian, wife Cynthia; and Joseph Dnistrian; grandmother of Sarah, Stephen and Caroline. For forty years Rosie worked at the Casino-in-the-Park, Jersey City where she greeted thousands with a warm smile and her sweet Irish brogue. Rosie greeted many celebrities including Bill Clinton, Muhammad Ali, and Bon Jovi. Rosie Doherty Dnistrian was named Senior Citizen of Jersey City in 2012 by Mayor Healy. Rosie is also survived by brothers Hubert in Downey and George in North Hollywood; sisters Bridget in Downey and Margaret in Huntington Beach. Predeceased by brothers Barney, Frank, Dominic, Jack, and Michael; and sisters Kathleen and Mary Alice.
